A citizen of the globe

Do we still have purely national identities?

Scottish, British, European,

which one do I choose,

only one identity,

or citizen of the globe?

What was once a big space,

compressed by air travel and internet,

no longer unexplorable,

all of earth within our reach.

All of the world is home,

not just one country or destination…

A Writers Life

Its never boring always more to come…

A writers life is never dull,

planning, writing, editing,

always something new.

So many genres to explore,

novels, short stories and poems,

these are just a few.

It’s a great creative outlet,

words and feeling flow,

except when writers block appears,

and anxieties in the air.

Even that soon passes,

and its straight back to the fun,

creating, learning, sharing,

words and stories with the world…

The Salmon Leap

Bridge of Feugh on the River Dee

The Salmon leap on the river dee,

known as the bridge of Feugh,

where the water flows and tumbles,

and the salmon make the jump.

Heading onwards upstream,

towards their nurseries,

up in the cairngorms park,

where the water’s cool and clean.

A pristine nature park,

if your ever up that way,

head through the dee valley,

take a trip to bridge of Feugh,

where the salmon leap,

and the view is great…

Football and me

Football or soccer,

either name is fine,

game first played in Britain,

mostly won by someone abroad.

The beautiful game,

so the story goes,

beloved by millions,

across the globe.

Mostly watched on TV,

in far away lands,

Man United on the big screen,

in a pub in Kazakhstan.

The worlds most sucessful export,

played and enjoyed around the globe,

we come together every four years,

where the world plays for the cup.

Safe Harbor

A parking spot for boats and a place of wonder

Large and small,

famous and humble,

safe refuge from weather,

a place to recharge.

Harbor is a safe place,

refuge from the storm,

start of new adventures,

at sea and on land.

No finer sight than the breakwater,

home is in sight,

then after two days,

head back out again.

A life spent at sea,

the ultimate mistress,

through good times and bad,

she entices you back.

Safe harbor an oasis,

a center of calm…

Aberdeen

The Granite City on the North Sea Coast

Grey in the rain,

brilliant silver in the sun,

the granite city of Aberdeen,

silver darling of the north sea coast.

Fishing, Oil, Energy,

all compete for her affections,

a capital of industry, economic powerhouse.

City and nature share same space,

20 minutes and your in the hills,

the great cairngorm mountain range.

Unassuming people, unassuming place,

Aberdeen the granite city,

yes its my favorite place.

The Dee Valley

A hidden paradise in the North East of Scotland

Sunny days and golden rays,

shine down the dee valley,

the river flowing to the sea,

narrow, rough and rapid.

Salmon there they leap and climb,

life born in the dee valley.

A microclimate full of grace,

sheltered from the wind and rain,

hidden jewel of Scotland.

If you ever visit my home land,

make sure you travel there,

to the heartland of the North East,

the Dee Valley paradise.

Social distancing, not distance from society

A poem about Social Distancing

Social distance the new norm,

2 meters is the rule,

for sitting in the restaurant,

or swimming in the pool.

These rules are for good health,

and I guess they are here to stay,

until the WHO tells us there is another way.

These are crazy time’s we live in,

sad to say but true,

living in a new world,

adjusting to its rules.

The mask

A poem about the new normal, not the classic Jim Carey movie…

2020s must have item,

a surgical face mask,

we don’t wear them just for fashion,

they are not worn for a laugh.

A new normal is upon us,

an adjustment to be made,

masks no longer an option,

a new accessory for the face.

We will wear them going forward,

no longer just for medical staff,

the world will get to know them,

new fashion trends will pass.

Living Overseas

A poem about expat life

Living as an expat,

a new life overseas,

difficult decision for many,

but the best thing they’ve ever done.

Life in endless sunshine,

in different culture’s too,

something here for everyone,

to live and learn anew.

Rarely does it last forever,

you feel the constant tug of home,

asking you to join her,

to live at home once more.

Life as an expat is a blast,

hold onto it while it lasts,

cultures, experiances, memories,

all unique to you and cherished.

Something to hold on to,

when the call for home comes through.
